Hungary's green skyscraper Mol Campus, Budapest (HU)
Budapest is home to a lighthouse project. MOL Campus is not only the tallest building in Hungary but also a role model of sustainable architecture. For this, the building has already received the BREEAM Excellent certification.
MOL Campus in Budapest is a stunning new building. With a height of 143 meters, the 28-storey high-rise made of glass in the young residential and business district BudaPart is considered the tallest office building in Hungary.
Due to its size, the new headquarters of the Budapest-based, international oil and gas company MOL Group was not only met with enthusiasm. However, the “office of the future“ won recognition with its sustainability strategy. The builders aimed for the world-renowned sustainability certificates BREEAM Excellent and LEED Platinum. They have now achieved the former.
National and International Labels
Three standards have become established internationally: LEED, BREEAM and DGNB. Depending on the market, important local labels are added, for example Minergie in Switzerland, Well in Poland and Scandinavia or NABERS and Green Stars in Australia.
Heating with renewable energy
A key factor for the award was the heating and cooling system, which runs entirely on renewable energy. More than 300 geothermal probes were installed at depths of up to 120 metres, covering a third of the heating and cooling needs. At peak times, the heating system can also be supplemented by district heating. 900 square meters of solar collectors on the roof and an integrated building management system also contribute to the environmentally friendly energy balance.
Water is also a precious commodity in this building. Greywater and rainwater are purified, stored and reused for flushing toilets and watering green areas. The entire building has been equipped with Geberit Pluvia roof drainage system and its emergency overflow set. Geberit products were also relied on for sanitary facilities in order to meet the high-quality requirements. Among other things, more than 400 Acanto WCs, several thousand metres of piping systems, and numerous installation elements and cisterns with an environmentally friendly dual-flush system were installed.

Green surroundings
Budapest’s new landmark has been designed by the global architectural studio Foster + Partners together with the Hungarian Finta Studio. “The planning and construction took more than five years,“ says Tibor Gáspár, building services engineer at Körös Consult Ltd. The project has been finished by the end of 2022.
On around 86,000 square meters, an area the size of twelve football fields, 2500 workplaces, several restaurants, conference rooms and a fitness studio were created. Lush gardens connect the office spaces, bringing nature and work closer together. The cherry on top is the publicly accessible roof garden with a view that - just like the building - is sensational.
